How to upload files?

I think I got my fileserver working, and configured an upload folder (red)
My friend is supposed to connect to it by a webbrowser, I think.
When he does he sees my upload folder.
How on earth does he upload a file to my fileserver?

Tanx!

Yep, I read the manual ofcourse.

it says, anyone who has access to my hfs can upload files.
Let me explain better what I mean.

I gave my friend access to open the folder on my harddisk by typing in my ip-number.
He sees in his browser my red folder uploads, after typing in his name and password. But the question is how does he upload a file to my upload folder?
Does he use an FTP programm of does he have to have hfs on his computer too?
I thought it would be able to upload files just using his browser? Am I wrong?
When I am right the question stays how can he do it?

When your friend browses to an upload enabled directory, he should notice a button with "Upload" on it.
After clicking the button, a new window will pop up for entering the files to upload.
No special software is needed.

You have to give the people you want "access" to upload to your server.  If you don't, they won't see a upload button on their pages.

In HFS virtual file system (left side of gui) right click on your upload folder -> select Upload -> upload for accounts ->  click on "anyone" or the user names of your choice.

At first thanx for the help everybody.

Now we are close to the solution I think; my friend (who I gave permission to access my upload-folder) does see the upload folder but he doesn't see a special button to upload any files.

When he clicks the upload folder the folder opens and he can look into it, but no buttons either.
He also tried to right-click on and in the folder but no option to upload appears.

So the actual problem is; there is no upload-option for my friend.

Anyone knows how to fix this?

Mickey,

I assume that you are the one running the HFS server.  Right?  If so, You have to do the configuring of the server.  Not your friend.  Your friend is just a user.

Configure HFS as indicated in this thread.  When your friend accesses your server he should see the upload button on his browser page and therefore be able to upload files to your server.

Hello Maverick,

yes the HFS server is running on my good old laptop. I added a folder "Uploads" as a non-virtual folder, so in my HFS server this folder appears in red.
I added two users. My friend and me. Then I right-clicked the folder Uploads and gave him and me rights to that folder by marking his and my account-names. So we should be able to upload I think.
The problem is; he sees the folder called Uploads in his browser, but there isn't an option to upload, even not under the right mouse button nor anywhere else. When he left-clicks the folder opens in his browser and he sees a new folder called "Up" so he can go back to the 'uploads-screen".
When we right-click the 'uploads'-folder the options are: Open, open in new window, save target, print target, copy link, add to favorites and properties. There is supposed to be an option Upload file, but there isn't.

Wish I could show you a screendump but that isn't possible I notice.

In what are you right clicking - your browser?  Those options sound like they are coming from a browser.   If so, you won't see a upload option.  The upload option originates from HFS and a upload button is shown on the user's browser page for the upload folder as long as he is given access to upload to your server.  You mentioned a UP folder.  Are you sure you aren't referring to a UP link to go back to a previous page?

Capture the screens of interest as well as your HFS virtual file system gui and send them to imageshack.  Place a link to the thumbnails here so we can see what you are talking about.  Don't give up.  I'm sure there must be an easy explanation.  So, far I think there is a bit of a misunderstanding going on.

your right about that; he is clicking in his browser. In earlier posts there was told he doesn't need a copy of hfs on his machine.
But now you tell me the upload button is coming from HFS, so from my laptop?

your right again about that up link to go back to previous page either.

Never heard about imageshack. Where can I find this? No I won't give up. I'm very curious how to get this working. Maybe a new subject for the manual? :)

Mickey,

First off, only you need to run HFS.  It is server software.

Start over again.

1. Delete your existing upload folder from HFS Virtual File System.
2. On your hard drive create a new folder and call it Uploads.
3. Right Click on / in HFS Virtual File System and select Add Folder from disc.  Add the folder you just made in #2 above.
4. Save that as a "Real Folder" when you are prompted to do so.
5. Now right click on the folder called Uploads shown in the HFS Virtual File System and select Uploads -> Upload from accounts and select anyone or you and your friends name.
6. Done.

When your friend goes to your site he will see the folder called Uploads.  When he clicks on that a page will open.  There probably won't be any files in that folder and you will see a message saying that.  Now on the top part of that browser page your friend should see a upload button.  He would click on that button and another page pops up where he can add the files that he wants to upload.  You can test this locally as well.

Hope this helps as there is nothing else I can tell you.

That 's what I have to check if I have done it right. I gave my friend access to the fileserver, but I don't think I found this option "upload from accounts', so that's what I should search for.

When I am home tonight I will try; I let you know if I found it.

Very much thanx.

'Now on the top part of that browser page your friend should see a upload button'

That's it; this button is missing. Why?

If this button would be there our problem would be solved.

My dear friend Maverick,
the problem is solved; I had to install HFS version 2.0 instead of 1.6
Now it is working exactly as you told me.

So maybe you can apply this info in your manual, so no one will bother you again with this problem no longer.

Thanx for your devoted tries to help me. I think I will enjoy the program very much since I want to share often files with my friends.

greetz, Mickey

Maverick,
Just one small problem arised again.

My friend does have the upload button.
He can browse in his explorer to select a file to upload.
After he pushes the button 'upload files' a page comes up telling the page can't be found. And that it is not available or the browser configuration needs to be adjusted.

Do you know what to do to fix this?
