download speed differences between OS...

Hello, and first off hfs is a great program. That being said I'm running into problems with my download speeds between operating systems. I have a friend who has two pc's (each with their own 4MB/s cable ips), with his one older computer running windows 98 he can get a download speed of ~3.50 MB/s. On his newer pc with windows XP he can only get 30-40 KB/s. I have also had 2 other people in the area on high speed cable connects test it out (they both run win XP) and they can only get 30-40 KB/s downloads too. I have tried v1.5g and the newer test version 1.6, and the same results with each. The speed limit is turned off in the program and none of my friends had a firewall or anything of that sort turned on during the tests. My question is: is this something anyone else has experienced and if so how did you get around it? I don't see why 98 can rip down a file at blazin' speeds while other computers (some on the same network) running XP are getting paltry speeds in comparison?

Thanks for any help that can be provided and btw I'm running win XP pro myself.

I must say, that when I test-downloaded on the same PC that HFS is running on - I got "Only" about 1MB/sec which is very good for all ADSL/CABLE conections my friends have (<2.5 Mbit/sec).

So, 40KB/Sec seems to be not related to the HFS or OS. Probably more to the upload internet bandwidth limit the HFS PC has.

Anyway - you can try use getright and accelerate with multiple connections/downloads. But, if I'm right above - this will not help either...

actually the 98 computer and the xp computer (both are download subjects) were on the same network (2 feet from eachother, both with identical nic cards and their own ip addy) when he tried downloading from me. The 98 pc blazed but the xp was a turtle? So the remote host pc is capable of handling the uploading to support a 3.5mb/s download speed for the 98 OS but the xp downloading on the same network as the 98 pc won't duplicate that speed?

weird, we set up a couple more pcs (4 total,3xp 1 98) on the network (we're not using the local lan addys,we're running the program thru the  ip addresses from his ISP), and did some variations on hosting and downloading. Turned out that it didn't matter which xp computer was hosting, the other 2 would still only download at 30-40KB/s while the 98 machine downloaded at 3 to 3.5mb/s every time. Even when the old 98 machine hosted, the other xp pcs would all grab the files at 2mb/s everytime. But without fail the xp machines get the 30-40kb/s download speeds when they interact with eachother.

Did u try to download via FTP? Download a free server and test the speeds.

As i know winxp uses some kind of control in the internetspeed
for default. Did u turned that off?

it is included in windows' CD

sorry, been out of town for a little while. I haven't tried the ftp server yet as I already have one (HFS is just quicker and easier for the friends who aren't as computer literate). Those speeds I listed are fairly accurate as the 98 machine would download a 300mb file in just under 2 minutes real time while the xp machines all took around 2 1/2 to 3 hours real time to download the same 300mb file. It's still a great program though and thanks for all the suggestions.
