hi lostwood,
you are the first one reporting such problem.
please tell us WHEN it locks up, on which action.
until the problem is solved, my advice is to lower the priority of the process to idle. this way you will be able to kill the process easily.

It is not a virus.  i am running norton corporate 10.
The only thing detected was a adaware program that has been deleted.
As far as what is happening to cause it.  I dont know, I have not been at the pc when it locks up.  it happends at night or during the day when i am not at home.  i usually have to end the program and i just keep it closed until i am done working.
i will trouble shoot some more

lostwood,

It might be something running in the background or something scheduled to run at a certain time that might be causing a conflict or even some program fighting over the same port.  You mentioned you use Norton AntiVirus.  Do you have that running in the background?  Do you use trojan/spyware scanners on your system?  What about memory?  Have you noticed a drain of your ram for no good reason?    You said that the problem happens at night or when you aren't home which tells me you aren't using the computer for anything else at those times, so there is no reason for the 100% CPU usage or lockups.  It's probably something else and not HFS causing the problem.

are you sure it is HFS using the CPU, or you just guess it?

Why??  Bad advice.  Nothing in this thread suggests a corrupt operating system.

I also had the same problem after I had fiddled with the options for logging to a file.

I disabled log-files and the problem went away. I dont need logging so I did not investigate what exactly caused the problem.
