Custom icons for file types

I've read through the documentation but I'm afraid I'm still stumped as to how to change the icon displayed next to the file.

For example, I'd like to write something that functions like:

etc.

I know the above isn't actually the correct syntax, but that's the general idea that I'm trying to achieve.
