Sad  Before i reformatted, i was connected through my ethernet card on cable modem, hfs worked like a dream, after i reformatted, i couldnt get my ethernet card to work, so i had to hook my cable modem up through usb, and surprisingly, usb seems faster to me, however, whenever i try to load hfs and switch the server to on it says "cannot open port" i've tried tons of ports, and tried letting it choose it's own port but, same thing happens all the time, i'm not behind a firewall that i know of, unless windows xp defaults one.

i have no idea about your problem
i fear it is not related to HFS: can you run another server software on your system ?

yes, i can run cerberus ftp just fine, and also i can run apache web server, with php, perl, cgi, mySQL, just fine, i also,  fear that its not related at all to HFS because it worked fine before the modem incident, i was just wondering if maybe you have to be connected through an ethernet card or something in order to work it? Sad??

I hope you figure out what the problem is.
I'm getting the exact same thing "cannot open port".

I did nothing out of the usual.  I rebooted my computer this morning and HFS is the only thing that doesn't work..  It's really really wierd I wonder if a new virus is going around?

I have not installed any new software since this happened. Sad

are you using the last release?
can you check if a port is free?
you could use netstat

Deepfriedluigi are you using trillian, Gaim, or any other type of "all in one" instant messengers?

I'm using trillian and after I rebooted my computer and HFS stopped working, I noticed the settings for the trillian are all messed up. I restored it from a backup and connected. I instantly received 2 urgent messages from MSN & Yahoo stating that if you are using an all in one messenger then you should discontinue because there has been malicious port attacks to these people.  I'm wondering if that is what happened?  I'm not totally sure as of right now.  I've spent 2 days straight trying to figure out this problem but I think I'm going to abandon the quest and reload windows.  Sad

rejetto:
I'm running HFS 1.5rc12 but I get the same exact problem in all previous versions as well.

Is there anything specific that I should know as to how HFS connects using TCP? I don't think it's a port problem but more along the lines of a connectivity problem. I say this because when I click 'Check for news/updates" I receive the error message "Can't connect, can't check".

I've tried other http servers and all of them seem to work with no problems. As of now I have absolutely no idea why HFS is the only program that cannot connect. I'm going to review the source code now to see if I can find exactly what is going on.

I personally think the problem may be a new type of virus, Trojan horse, or a TCP port attack but I did a full Norton virus scan and it found nothing. **I'm Baffled**....  :?:

I'll report back if and when I find something new.

Try in DOS :

              netstat -a  | more

and see if the port is not occupied .

Oh!  Now that you mentioned that I just realised that I uninstalled Norton Antivirus 2003 a couple days before hand.  That might be the problem.

hey you guys, i found out how to fix the problem

it happens when the function converting string 'tcp' to integer 6 is not working, i think it is problem of the host machine, but the solution is simple, i will specify the integer 6 directly instead of the string 'tcp'

ETA for version 1.5c : 32 hours
