This Glossary is not a comprehensive computer science dictionary. Instead, it aims to provide a helpful guide to the language used in the HFS documentation.


Context file menu
Deprecated term for Context menu.
Context menu
What you see when you right-click on a file, folder, application titlebar, or nearly any other object on the screen. This menu includes a list of actions appropriate to the clicked object. For file icons, the context menu depends upon the type of file, but normally includes Copy, Paste, Delete, Rename, Open, and Properties (among others).
DNS
Abbreviation for Dynamic Name System.
Easy mode
HFS operation mode suitable for beginners. More advanced Menus and options are hidden.
Expert mode
HFS operation mode for advanced users. All Menus, options and other facilities are immediately available.
HFS
Abbreviation for Http File Server.
HTML
Abbreviation for Hypertext Markup Language. Used to create Internet pages.
Http
Abbreviation for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. Also HTTP. The communications protocol that enables Web browsing.
HTTPS
Abbreviation for HTTP Over SSL. A protocol that enables the secure transmission of Web pages.
Real folder
An HFS folder that exists on the server host's hard disk. Normally colored red.
SSL
Abbreviation for Secure Sockets Layer. A commonly-used protocol for managing the security of message transmission on the Internet. SSL has recently been succeeded by Transport Layer Security (TLS), which is based on SSL. "Sockets" refers to the sockets method of passing data back and forth between a client and a server program in a network, or between program layers in the same computer.

VFS
Abbreviation for Virtual File System.
Virtual folder
An HFS folder that does not physically exist on the server host's hard disk. Normally colored yellow.
